 WALK THE LAKES 2013
FAMILY HEALTH & FUN DAY: RECREATIONAL OVAL, THE LAKES, SATURDAY MARCH 9TH

Summer is here and families in the Bay are invited to come together and enjoy a family health and fun day at Walk the Lakes Tauriko 2013!

Walk the Lakes is Tauranga Parent Centre’s flagship fundraising event and is open to all family members young and old, pregnant and non-pregnant.

“We realized that there was a great opportunity to raise the profile of Tauranga Parent Centre in the local community and to promote healthy family activity choices,” says Eden Hersey, of BloomBaby, and Walk the Lakes coordinator.

Sue Macilwee, of Baby on the Move, who is also coordinating the event agrees, “Tauranga Parent Centre runs the highest number of ante-natal classes in New Zealand and we really wanted to create an opportunity to bring all these families together to celebrate and support what the centre does.”

Walk the Lakes gives families the opportunity to come down to the Recreational Oval at The Lakes development Tauriko and choose from two walk routes which follow scenic paths through the second stage of the sub-division.

Eden explains: “Our initial idea was to create a walk event around our local landmark Mt. Maunganui, but we soon realized that the walkways and parks, at The Lakes, provided a more family friendly environment and pathways that were suitable for all fitness levels, ages and prams/strollers.”

Sue Macilwee has been really happy at how positive local support has been for the event.
“We have approached a number of local businesses and they are supporting the event by holding a trade site at Walk the Lakes on the day (Saturday, 9th March) or are sponsoring prizes in our gold and silver prize pool.

“We have a number of prizes that include several $100 gift hampers, massage therapy sessions, Hot Milk lingerie, cloth nappy starter packs, a term of swimming lessons and a stroller and carrier from Phil & Ted. Combined, our sponsored prizes are worth over $2,500 and everyone who registers to complete the walk has a chance to win – they just need to stay for the prize-giving which is straight after the walks are completed.”

Participants don’t need to be fitness fanatics to enter. Everyone can choose from a 3km ‘enjoyable stroll’ or choose to do the more challenging 5km route. Both walks include cobbled pathways or footpaths and are suitable for strollers and prams. It is recommended that children 5yrs and under are transported.

“Walk the Lakes is definitely a family-focused event and we would ask that if the family dog is part of your family effort, that they are securely leashed at all times. Scooters are suitable as long as children are closely monitored – however, bikes please leave at home. This is really our attempt to create a walking event that is safe, considerate and friendly for all ages and capabilities.”

“The walk event will begin at 10am; however, families can come down from 9am and register for Walk the Lakes on the day (and be in the draw for some great prizes) or simply enjoy browsing the trade sites, have a coffee and let the kids have some fun on the bouncy castles that are all part of the family fun-day experience.”

Prize-giving will be at 11.30am and official finish of Walk the Lakes at 1pm. Registration is either a $20 or $10 donation (gold and silver prize pools respectively) to the Tauranga Parent Centre.
