This one day workshop is specifically tailored for lawyers and is designed to enhance your ability to connect with Māori who you may be working with as clients, stakeholders, partners or in another capacity. Experienced facilitators will guide you through an interactive day as you consider the who, why and the how to successfully engage with Māori in the law.

This workshop will provide you with practical tools, such as law specific te reo Māori resources, to ensure that what you learn can be incorporated into your work environment.

The programme focuses on:

  • Understanding Tikanga and Kawa and how these principles form Māori understandings of the world.
  • How these align with personal and professional values and principles within the law.
  • Development of knowledge and understandings of te reo Māori.
  • Implementation of te reo Māori resources and workable methods that can be adopted by participants in their work environments.
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and some misunderstandings that have emerged from our history.
  • Effective and correct engagement methods with whānau, hapū, Iwi and hāpori Māori.
  • Enabling participants to navigate confidently in te Ao Māori environments while recognising and respecting the unique identity and culture of te iwi Māori in Aotearoa.
  • Implementing all the course teachings to create enduring and successful relationships with Māori in the law.

Learning objectives

By the end of this workshop you will have greater confidence engaging within te Ao Māori environments in both your professional and personal life; and be able to provide a working environment ideal for developing and embracing productive, successful and enduring working relationships.


This interactive workshop is focused on developing your skills, and will use a range of teaching and learning methods.

Who should attend

All practitioners within the legal sector wanting to develop their understanding to engage positively with Māori be they clients, stakeholders, partners etc, but are unsure how to do so or even who to seek guidance from, will benefit from attending this workshop.


Participants will receive a folder of materials on the day, with a some preliminary reading to be completed before the workshop.

Cancellation and refund policy

Please note: Minimum and maximum numbers apply. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come/first-served basis. Registrations close 10 working days before the presentation date (the closing date). NZLS CLE Ltd reserves the right to cancel any session that does not reach the budgeted minimum number of registrations. This decision will be made on the closing date and a full refund will be made to each registrant of the cancelled session. If you cancel your registration before the closing date, a refund will be made, less a $100 administration fee. After the closing date, there will be no refund. You may transfer your registration until five working days before the presentation. Please advise NZLS CLE Ltd in writing of the change.
