With the election and subsequent formation of a new coalition government, practitioners and their clients need to keep abreast of developments that may impact on them. New Zealand has a rapidly aging population. With New Zealand First as a coalition partner, you can expect older people’s issues to be priority for the new government. One of the more contentious Elder Law issues in recent times has been who should pay for the costs of care for those in geriatric long-term rest home care.

This seminar will include:
  • Discussion of the recent High Court decision of Broadbent v the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Social Development
  • An outline of the legislative and policy scheme
  • Implications of the Court of Appeal case – and the practicalities going forward
  • Where to from here for government in this space – beyond the 100 days
  • Practical advice for engaging with government agencies
  • Examining real life practical scenarios for their fish-hooks
