Family Law is dynamic. It changes quickly to keep pace with the values in the particular society it is operating in. We still have a long way to go to ensure our Family Law System implements and reflects the values of our indigenous culture and is truly law for Aotearoa and all our citizens. We have had the 2014 reforms which have caused major changes and challenges to how our Family Law System works. The Law Commission is currently looking at reform of Relationship Property. The public face of family law is changing rapidly with the introduction of the Oranga Tamariki legislative reforms. We still have much to do to put systems in place which prevent and protect families from suffering violence in their homes. Mental Health services are being reviewed and with an aging population issues of competence and independence come into focus. On top of all this technology advances at high speed and challenges the way we do things.
This unique one-day conference with our very special guest Lady Hale, President of the United Kingdom Supreme Court gives us the opportunity to think about what the future of family law in Aotearoa could and should be. We also have the person at the sharp end of reform, the Minister of Justice, Hon Andrew Little. All the speakers will focus on the future of family law as they see it. This is your opportunity to be part of what I hope will be revolutionary thinking and debate about what we can do much better. There are still many whose important voices say the system is not working for them and is doing more harm than good. Please seize this moment.Professor Mark Henaghan – Chair
