From the Chair

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā kārangaranga maha, tēnā koutou katoa. He kaupapa nui whakahirahira kei te haere, arā ko te ao hurihuri. Nō reira nau piki mai, nau kake mai me ō koutou whakaaro, kōrero hoki. Mauri ora!

2018 is an exciting time to be an employment law practitioner. We are undergoing widespread change: global change to working arrangements and the gig economy; changes to New Zealand’s employment laws; changes to society; and changes that we are seeing within our own profession. This has created an overwhelming theme for the 12th NZLS CLE Employment Law Conference: “Change”.

In a world of agile working, automation and artificial intelligence, who knows what the future of work will bring? Whether it is full automation, working through digital platforms or more employees working from home, globally we have a time of change with the fourth industrial revolution. Technology is weaving its way further into our working lives, increasing the pace at which work is done and bringing new challenges for workers’ wellbeing.

Coupled with this fast pace of technological evolution, our Government has a focus on the protection of the rights of the worker. Our Government and our profession are tackling complex issues such as the importance of minimum entitlements, balance between employer prerogative and worker rights, and debate about concepts such as privacy in the digital world and the universal basic income. The conference will explore changes to the legal framework in which we operate and the influence on our laws from global drivers, such as pay equity, worker status and contingent workforces. We will also address broader societal challenges, such as mental health, bullying and harassment, and the importance of resilience in the workplace.

It is only fitting that we embrace the technology available to us at this year’s conference so that everyone can engage in the valuable conversation and debate that this conference provides. This year’s conference will harness these digital opportunities.

I look forward to welcoming you to the conference, gathering your views and continuing the conversation about change.

Nō reira, rau rangatira mā, kōkiri. Tēnā tātou katoa.

Chair: Gillian Service
