From the Chair

The ever increasing bracket of New Zealanders over the age of 65 years has seen the area of elder law move from one undertaken by the generalist to that of the specialist. This year’s Elder Law conference continues to develop practitioners’ legal expertise and social understanding with a multidisciplinary collection of papers, both technical and practical, associated with best practice in elder law. The cross section of papers includes a range of topics from an insight on recent case law and developments in such areas as testamentary promises and undue influence claims, through to the technical aspects of an application under the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act. The diversity of our aged population, both culturally and in their domesticity, sees cross border succession planning gaining increasing complexity and with the Law Commission’s review of the Property (Relationships) Act 1976 underway, it will be timely to understand how this could impact on your elderly clients and their relationships. There will also be an opportunity for a thought provoking panel discussion and question/answer session. This conference is an essential opportunity to update, learn and network.
