Our favourite 2019 ERO comments:

Children lead their own learning through a curriculum that is based on their interests and highly reflective of their community. They are supported to explore their thinking about the world and often share what they know. Regular excursions give children meaningful opportunities to visit places of local significance. Children display a sense of self and belonging.

A holistic approach to teaching and learning effectively promotes children's wellbeing as a platform for further learning. Routines and strategies to support social competence are consistently implemented to foster children's sense of security.

Māori children's identities are valued as the foundation for their educational success. Teachers acknowledge and make connections to individual children's pepeha. They are building understanding of kaupapa Māori approaches to teaching and learning and make these visible within the curriculum.

Testimonial:

When I had the privilege to visit Wairoa Kindergarten, late in March 2021, I immediately felt that all dreams and aspirations were coming true.
Here was a garden with a building; an outdoor learning space with a clever, covered area in case you want to make a cup of coffee.
The Garden was a little forest-in-the-making and it reminded me of the best ECE and Primary School facilities I have seen around the country, in places such as Te Anau, Eskdale, Te Awanga/Haumoana and many more!
There are now soooo many "Hope Spots" around Aotearoa where teachers and students explore the operations manual of Planet Earth and Wairoa is very much one of those!
Imagine growing cohort after cohort of Nature-Literate young New Zealanders who will become experts in generosity, collaboration and respect. Now imagine these youngsters leading the Restoration activities around Mahia peninsula and running the kohanga kiwi.
And as we all know: that starts right at the beginning... at Early Childhood education.
Go well, Wairoa Kindergarten; You certainly are on-track!
