Councillor announces mayoral candidacy

15 July, 2022

thumbnail Victoria-print--16 2-150On the opening day of the local body electoral nominations period, Kaipara councillor Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock announced her bid to be the next Kaipara mayor.

“I am ready to take our amazing district forward with a steady hand,” Ms del la Varis-Woodcock stated. “With me as mayor, you have a proven leader.”

With two terms serving as the West Coast/Central ward councillor Ms del la Varis-Woodcock has a purpose: to help Kaipara people better design their future.

She says the steadiness and life experience that comes from living a farming life, raising a family, and delivering the successful Love Kaipara waste minimisation programme makes her a well-rounded mayoral candidate.

A master’s degree in politics also gives her the crucial edge to stand up for democracy, she believes.

“With the raft of reforms coming for local government, it is the right time to push for our district to have a say over our destiny.”

Nominators from Kaipara’s east and west have shown their support for Ms del la Varis-Woodcock’s mayoralty.

“A council needs to listen to the people, and to deliver the best services possible within our means, based on community-led decisions about our infrastructure,” Ms del la Varis-Woodcock insists.

Even with the new council being sworn in during this uncertain period of proposed reform, del la Varis-Woodcock says she relishes the challenges ahead.

“I have been a well-known advocate for affordable rates, and that goal is for keeps, along with keeping services localised.”

“As mayor, I will lead a council that strives for excellence and gets the basics right. I know we can all work together to make Kaipara an even more desirable place to live.”
