New Anglican Church opens

new-church

BLESSING: The new bright and modern Anglican church.

Mangawhai’s new Anglican church was opened recently by the Right Reverend Bishop Jim White, Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Auckland.

Following a service of thanksgiving and secularisation in the old chapel, the 52-strong congregation enjoyed a dedication in the new church.

The original building was a schoolhouse in 1885 and after a dedication in 1957 has been a place of worship for the local Anglican community.

Bishop Jim delivered a strong message at the opening: “This new building has five doors, and all open outwards. It is for us to go out into the community.”

Parishioners are extremely grateful to all who have contributed time, money and materials, including a substantial bequest from Rae Coulter, and Gerda de Boer and her family

The octagonal shape of the new church and the light that radiates from the high ceiling give a sense of warmth.

“We are delighted with how the church has turned out. A number of people have remarked that it feels as though we have always been there,” says Priest-in-charge Dianne Hawken. “We would like the community to feel welcome in this place so we are having church open Saturdays in March where you can come in, have a look and maybe sit for awhile and enjoy morning tea.”

The facility has a large kitchen and the church opens into the hall. It can seat around 140 so is suitable for weddings, funerals and other functions.

The old church has been gifted to the Mangawhai Artists Association.

NOTICE: Church open 10am–12pm every Saturday in March (March 16, 10am-3pm). Christ the King Anglican Church, 9 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai. All welcome for a cup of tea or coffee and to sit awhile.
