Human Resources Required:
- School caretaker to help in maintenance of garden i.e.: watering, spraying, protection, etc.
- One or more teacher(s) per class willing to actively participate, direct, supervise and teach children the appropriate gardening skills and associate activities on a regular and well applied basis.
- Parents and community volunteers.
- A nominated Community Garden Consultant can help when expertise is unavailable from the classroom to best direct the efforts of students and teachers.
Duties:
- Coordinate and plan projects.
- Organize seedling and supply pick up and delivery.
- Consult with teachers & volunteers in planning garden projects / activities.
- Provide advance preparation for projects.
- Work with children to develop appropriate gardening skills.
- Consultancy hours are subject to season variation and the gardens level of development. 25 to 30 hours a week could be expected of a new or actively developing project.
Materials:
- Compost, soils, mulches and barks, etc
- Composting system
- Irrigation system, garden hoses and ready access to water taps or tanks
- Worm farm
- Seedlings, seed and plants
- Fertilisers and liming agents
- Sprays (primarily of an organic nature), spraying apparatus
- Growing containers, pots and edging
- Lock-up shed
- Garden tools (hoes, stiff-tined rake plus lawn/leaf rake and mini rakes, trowels, two-point hoes, loppers, secateurs, garden forks, weeders, shovels, wheelbarrows, buckets)
- Lesson plans, instructional and information materials, garden guides, monthly garden calendar, teachers manuals, CD ROMs, etc. needed by both teacher(s) and students to instruct or guide their gardening and environmental units.

This represents the primary starting costs. Some under-cover areas and a lock-up shed were already on site. The teacher in charge who had a distinct interest and talent for gardening provided learning materials. Future projects would benefit from a teachers manual and creative lesson plan tailored to New Zealand situations. At present the best reference N.Z.sources currently in print would include the Yates Garden Guide and the IDG series, which includes the Gardening for Dummies books. There is considerable room for improvement here. Teachers, administration and care-taking/maintenance came through the school over and above their routine assignments and extreme demands on their valuable time. Volunteers, local business people, community leaders, consultants, growers and everyone else involved provided their time, assistance and often expensive materials free of charge.
