What is UMF

what is UMF

New Zealand Manuka honey has long been valued for its health-maintaining effects and Manuka honey is gaining worldwide recognition for its unique properties.
In 1981 research done at Waikato Honey Research Unit confirmed that  some strains of the New Zealand Manuka honey contains an extraordinary, naturally present, very stable and powerful unique activity not found in any other variety of honey. This unique activity is over and above the usual active properties of honey, and sets Manuka honey apart as one of nature's true wonder foods.
This activity was named as  a "Unique Manuka Factor" (UMF) which was later registered as a Trade Mark by Unique Manuka Honey Association.
UMF® stands for ‘Unique Manuka Factor’, a measure of the unique type of activity which is naturally present at varying levels in honey made from the nectar of the Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand.
The mark UMF® is followed by a number that indicates the strength of the UMF® activity in a batch of UMF® Manuka honey. The higher the UMF® rating, the more potent the product.

The UMF® range system rates natural markers found in manuka honey and guarantees purity and quality.
Correlation between UMF and MGO
UMF® Grade MGO Level (Methylglyoxal)
 5+  ≥ 83 mg/kg
10+  ≥ 263 mg/kg
15+  ≥ 514 mg/kg

To test for the unique activity, the UMF Honey Association utilizes a range of internationally recognized biological and chemical methods in approved laboratories both in  New Zealand and internationally.
So, when you see the "UMF" quality trademark , you can be sure you are buying the best, 100% natural, unadulterated Manuka honey.
