getimage911195

Dear Colleagues,

Only two weeks until Conference, so we are all very busy with final preparations – don’t forget to register soon!  Make sure you also attend our Aviation Awards Gala Dinner for the chance to win a mystery weekend courtesy of Air NZ.

This week we are delighted to confirm Hon Dr Nick Smith, Minister of Conservation, as our Summit keynote speaker for Tuesday 22 July. Dr Smith will be sharing his views on the important topic of aviation and environmental management, in particular in NZ’s significant conservation estate.  This is a key issue for many of our agricultural and tourism operators – don’t miss it.

In other breaking news, we are also delighted to announce our new International Ambassador for our DOWN TO THE WIRE programme.  He is an Australian business and aviation icon, as well as a household name on both sides of the Tasman.  Can you guess who?....It is none other than Mr Dick Smith.  Dick’s profile and persuasiveness will lend great weight to the advancement of our programme.  Well done to our AAA Chairman, Alan Beck, for bringing Dick on board.

Happy 4th of July y’all!

Customer Survey Updated

The survey emphasised the importance of agreeing on and doing a few things well so that ‘we’ can demonstrate leadership.  Last week we brought you news on some work in the Training and Development area.  NZAAA’s focus continues to be on: assuring sustainability by promoting best practice in environmental responsibilities, safe flight and decent profitability.  NZHA has re-endorsed the AIRCARE Programme and is determined to use it to get benefits for members - especially in respect of reduced CAA surveillance.

Pilots – demand and supply side questionnaires Updated

Questionnaires were sent to air operators and trainers 10 days ago.  Thanks very much to those that have already returned them, and for the offers to be involved in follow up work.  If you have completed the survey and not sent it yet, please do and don’t worry about the 1 July deadline!  There are some consistent trends in the responses but we need a few more to give more substance.  The pilot training questionnaire is here and the operator survey is here.  We will be contacting some companies next week.
The goal is to develop one database on the state of the pilot industry in New Zealand (current and future demand for pilots, current and future supplies of pilots, what we can do to improve the training of pilots to make them more employment ready).  We will share the aggregated data with the Tertiary Education Commission, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, who have helped in questionnaire development.  This will allow us all to work from the same understandings.

New GETS Website New

A reminder to those that use GETS to access government and some international tenders.  The new website goes live on 28 July.  A new coding system will be used to record tenders.  You MUST identify tender areas of interest using the new codes to continue getting tender alerts - the current tender alert system will stop.  The new website looks much more clear, is more intuitive and it is easier to identify past tender winners!

Cricket World Cup

The ICC Cricket World Cup opens in Christchurch on February 14 next year.  Great news for cricket fans – but great news for aviation too.  This is the biggest event in NZ since the Rugby World Cup in 2011 – let’s make the most of it. http://www.icc-cricket.com/cricket-world-cup

There will be thousands of fans travelling across the country to support their team – but also keen to have a New Zealand experience.  Are you thinking about what kind of charter packages you could offer to these high net worth and other visitors?  There’s a great business opportunity here. Over 1 million expected attendees and 1 billion TV viewers.

14 teams will be playing 49 matches over 44 days in 14 host cities across two countries. There are seven NZ host cities: Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The opening game is in Christchurch, as well as a quarter and semi-final and the showcase NZ - Australia match in Auckland.

Have a look at the match schedules so you can see where people will be and when http://www.icc-cricket.com/cricket-world-cup/fixtures .  We are working with CWC NZ to create opportunities for NZ aviation to promote its products and services.  More on this soon.

South Pacific Aviation Programme Updated

A major project supporting infrastructure development, sector reform and strengthening airport operations and management, primarily funded by the World Bank, is underway in the South Pacific (Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu).  We provided some material two weeks, and thanks to the companies that have alerted us to their interest in the project.  We had hoped by now to start bringing you details of recent project approvals.
However, the info is proving hard to get – much of it is not readily available in the public domain.  We are looking at a few options.  At this stage, we are interested in learning of more companies that are keen to look at opportunities in this project.  The attachment we provided last week to give an overview of the project is here.  The project manager, Darin Cusack, will be talking about this project at the Aviation Summit.

RAAA Conference, 8 - 10 October 2014

The Regional Aviation Association of Australia is holding its national convention ‘A New Horizon’ in the Hunter Valley.  The RAAA is the only organisation representing all sectors associated with Regional Aviation across Australia and therefore, plays a significant role in the aviation industry. The National Convention is highly regarded as a premier annual aviation event.  Av NZ CEO will be speaking at this event.  We also expect good representation from the RAAA executive at our Leadership Summit in July.  More info on the RAAA event is here
