Dear Colleagues,

This week the New Southern Sky was released.   This is NZ’s roadmap for the move to the next generation of CNS-ATM environment and will deliver an economic benefit of $2 billion over the next 20 years, as well as significant improvements in efficiency, safety and environmental outcomes.

As most of you know I am sure, CAA costs will increase from 1 July 2014 here.  I met with the CAA Director this week to discuss how we can reduce the overall cost burden on industry in the forthcoming Funding Review.  In the meantime, some good news, the CAA has subleased part of its Wellington office space to Callaghan Innovation saving $5.7 million.  We are looking forward to this saving being passed on to industry.

The ICC Cricket World Cup opens in Christchurch on February 14 next year.  Great news for cricket fans – but great news for aviation too, with over 1 million expected attendees let’s focus on the business opportunities here

The International Helicopter Safety Team was in Wellington recently and commented that our helicopter safety framework and performance is light years ahead of much of the rest of the world.  Pretty good eh!
 
Well done to John Funnell, Helicopter Services BOP Chief Pilot for taking emergency rations to charity Trans-Tasman kayaker, Scott Donaldson, located 560 km off the coast of Taranaki.

Aviation NZ AGM New

The Aviation NZ AGM will be held on 21 July at Westpac Stadium in Wellington.
A reminder that nominations are sought for the office of President and Vice President of Aviation New Zealand.  Eligible members are encouraged to submit their nominations (see clause 10 of the Aviation NZ Constitution for the eligibility criteria).  The nomination forms are here President, Vice President
 
Nominations must be signed by two but not more than two (2) ordinary members of Aviation NZ with a consent in writing signed by each member nominated that he or she is willing to serve.
 
Nominations must be received by next Tuesday 24 June to this email address.

Members are also invited to propose any Notices of Motion for the Annual General Meeting, pursuant to clause 29.14 of the Constitution.  Such notice must be received by Friday 27 June and must be signed by at least two financial ordinary members.

Aviation Leadership Summit 2014 Updated

We are delighted to release the full programme  for the Summit. This annual event is hosted by Aviation NZ as part of our mission to lead, inspire, and grow the New Zealand aviation industry, both domestically and offshore.
 
We are delighted to publish the draft agendas for the AAA and NZHA Conference for this year.  Dates are 20-22 July 2014.  These events will run alongside the Aviation Leadership Summit. 

The Summit is a by industry and for industry event. We aim to bring you a programme that is insightful, relevant, and engaging. At the same time our aim is to manage costs and overall resource requirements, so that we can offer industry a truly inspiring and cost-effective flagship industry event.

Our first Aviation Leadership Summit will be held at Westpac Stadium in Wellington 20-22 July 2014.  We will have EXCLUSIVE use of the Westpac Function Centre and we have a BRAND NEW venue for our Welcome Reception, opened by the Prime Minister recently.  Westpac Stadium is New Zealand’s premier multipurpose stadium and has hosted many world sporting and entertainment events.
 
The Summit replaces Napier Conference Week.
 
Celebrating 100 years of aviation – The Future.  This is the theme of our Summit.  We will celebrate what aviation has achieved over the last 100 years and look forward to what the next century will bring, operationally, technologically, economically and politically. 
 
Registration is NOW OPEN for exhibitors and delegates.  Exhibition stands are selling quickly.  We expect up to 300 people expected to attend the trade show each day and we will be ensuring active engagement between delegates and trade exhibitors.  More about this soon!

Structural Fatigue Management Courses to be run in Wellington in July alongside the Leadership Summit

Sam Kantimathi from Fatigue Concepts in the United States, will be in New Zealand again in July to deliver two courses.  Both will be delivered at Westpac Stadium, the venue for the Leadership Summit.  The courses are:
  • Composite Aircraft Structures, 21 and 22 July
  • Aging Aircraft, 23 and 24 July
More detail is attached.  Companies interested in attending should contact Sam Kanthimathi direct.  Be aware that it won’t be possible for the same company reps to attend the Leadership Summit and Fatigue Management courses.  You might look at delegating attendance at Fatigue Management to others.

Customer Survey Updated

In recent weeks we’ve commented on what you told us.  So what is happening?  Quite a bit is the short answer.  It will take a few newsletters to tell you.  The first area is Training and Development.  In terms of aligning thinking and collaborating, we’ve got input from TEC and Ministry of Education and interest in developing and sharing the same industry database.  This will help inform future Government policy development in aviation training, and in the 2015 Review.  We’ll talk about this at the Leadership Summit.  Work is also going on behind the scenes with CAA on developing an integrated training programme and with CAA, ASPEQ and other agencies on other ideas to potentially improving the competitiveness of the New Zealand training offer. More on this at the Summit too but we hope to share a success before then!

CAA standard hour charge increasing from 1 July New

You probably need no reminding but the CAA standard hourly charge increases on 1 July from the current $244 per hour including GST to $284 per hour including GST.
This is part of the Government approved funding framework that came into effect on 1 November 2012.

The New Southern Sky New

On Monday evening, Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee  released The National Airspace and Air Navigation Plan which will set the direction for the modernisation of New Zealand’s airspace and air navigation system.
The National Airspace and Air Navigation Plan enables the introduction of technology solutions over the next 10 years that will mean shorter journeys, improved safety and lower carbon emissions in the aviation sector.
This plan outlines how the government and aviation industry will manage the transition from ground-based to modern satellite-based navigation and surveillance technologies, digital information and communication systems, and streamlined air traffic control.  It promotes the uptake of new technologies with an estimated economic benefit of almost $2 billion over the next 20 years.
Implementation of the National Airspace and Air Navigation Plan will be developed under the ‘New Southern Sky’ programme. New Southern Sky will be a coordinated, cross-agency programme that runs through to 2023.

Cricket World Cup

The ICC Cricket World Cup opens in Christchurch on February 14 next year.  Great news for cricket fans – but great news for aviation too.  This is the biggest event in NZ since the Rugby World Cup in 2011 – let’s make the most of it. http://www.icc-cricket.com/cricket-world-cup
 
There will be thousands of fans travelling across the country to support their team – but also keen to have a New Zealand experience.  Are you thinking about what kind of charter packages you could offer to these high net worth and other visitors?  There’s a great business opportunity here. 14 teams will be playing 49 matches over 44 days in 14 host cities across two countries. There are seven NZ host cities: Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin.
 
The opening game is in Christchurch, as well as a quarter and semi-final and the showcase NZ - Australia match in Auckland.

Changes at Superstructure Group New

On 30 June, the Wellington based Superstructure Group of companies will become wholly owned subsidiaries of Rolls-Royce Controls and Data Services Limited, a new company formed by the merger of Optimized Systems and Solutions (OSyS) and Aero Engine Controls (AEC). 
This new group will trade as Controls and Data Services (CDS) and will continue to be wholly owned by the Rolls- Royce group.  This is a real tribute to the achievements of the Superstructure Group – New Zealand technology with more than 100 aviation customers in over 50 countries.  More here. India New Zealand Business Council Summit New

The Business Council is hosting a seminar, Business Beyond Barriers in Auckland on 8 July to celebrate its 25th anniversary.  Speakers include Minister Joyce, Jo Pennycuick of Redesign (contracts with Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore Airports), senior representatives from Fonterra, Zespri, Fisher & Paykel, and NZ government officials.  The PM will talk to the Summit dinner.  More info: http://www.inzbusinesssummit.com/

South Pacific Aviation Programme New

A major development project, primarily funded by the World Bank, is underway in the South Pacific.  Funding is guaranteed but the bid requirements can be onerous.  We are developing an understanding of the project.  Some consultancy work has come New Zealand’s way and we are now seeing some service development and product opportunities arising.  We’ve put together a background note.  The project will get bigger, it will cover other aviation elements and more funding will be approved.  We know of some companies keen to be involved in this programme.  Let us know of any interests you may have.  The project manager, Darin Cusack, will be talking about this project at the Aviation Summit.

RAAA Conference, 8 - 10 October 2014

The Regional Aviation Association of Australia is holding its national convention ‘A New Horizon’ in the Hunter Valley.  The RAAA is the only organisation representing all sectors associated with Regional Aviation across Australia and therefore, plays a significant role in the aviation industry. The National Convention is highly regarded as a premier annual aviation event.  Av NZ CEO will be speaking at this event.  We also expect good representation from the RAAA executive at our Leadership Summit in July.  More info on the RAAA event is here

P3 Orion International Operators Support Conference (P3 IOSC) Atlanta, Georgia, 12-16 October

New Zealand companies can attend and showcase their technologies or services at the next P3 IOSC in Atlanta, Georgia.  This conference is co-hosted annually by Lockheed Martin and an international operator country. This year it is New Zealand and the NZ Defence Force’s turn.
