CEO Update

Dear Colleagues,

A reflective week for aviation this week with fatal aircraft accidents in Hawkes Bay, Ardmore and Queensland, the continuing search for MH 370 ; plus yesterday the release of the TAIC Report into the ZK – HMU Robinson 22 accident over Mt Aspiring.

We are reviewing the findings of the TAIC Report to see what lessons can be learned and where we have opportunities to improve our practices and procedures.

These events remind us that as industry leaders we can never be complacent about safety or any aspect of our operations. Our Aviation Leadership Summit will help to ensure we focus on continuing to grow a safe, efficient and profitable industry for the next 100 years. I look forward to seeing you there.

In the meantime, the 50^th IATA Safety Report will soon be released and this year’s Report will be free, so I encourage you to read it.

Aviation Leadership Summit 2014

Our first Aviation Leadership Summit will be held at Westpac Stadium in Wellington 20-22 July 2014. We will have EXCLUSIVE use of the Westpac Function Centre and we have a BRAND NEW venue for our Welcome Reception (so new it hasn’t been opened yet!). Westpac Stadium is New Zealand’s premier multipurpose stadium and has hosted many world sporting and entertainment events.

Celebrating 100 years of aviation – The Future. This is the theme of our Summit. We will celebrate what aviation has achieved over the last 100 years and look forward to what the next century will bring, operationally, technologically, economically and politically. The draft Summit agenda is here

RAeS Conference - Formation in Flying

The Royal Aeronautical Society will hold its 29^th symposium at the CAA in Wellington on Friday 11 April. This year the symposium theme ‘Flying in Formation´ relates to Industry and Government working together to deliver continuing prosperity and security for New Zealand. Speakers who will cover a range of aviation topics including:
What is their organisation / company doing to contribute to prosperity/security?
What are the three greatest challenges that they currently face?
What are the three top things government and/or industry can do to help grow aviation’s contribution to New Zealand’s future?

Customer Expectations drive New Zealand Aviation innovation

Each month we write a column for Airwaves in Australia. In the March issue, which carries an article on Spidertracks and several ads from NZ companies, we wrote about innovation.
The basic question, what is it that distinguishes and characterises aviation innovation in NZ?
First and foremost, it is practical. What New Zealand companies develop actually works.
Secondly, we give customers what they want.

TEC and Ministry of Education Update

This week we met with Government to progress the training agenda.
Basic message: ‘this is the new AvNZ team, we are committed to the growth of the training industry, we are keen to work with government agencies to achieve this growth, we need to understand what is really important to government agencies (and we appreciate there are different drivers for different agencies), we see merit in developing a common understanding (and database) of the industry, and we are keen to work to the same industry development plan, recognising that we’ll have different responsibilities within it.

There was some good chemistry and we got a good hearing. Gus Gilmore was until very recently GM Operations, International Airline at Air NZ! The important role MBIE has to play in this whole area was also described. We all agreed that there would be merit in including MBIE in the next meeting, as well as Service IQ, which has funded work through BERL on the future manpower needs of Aviation.
